M11.5- A Zero Waste Life

This module was a little conflicting to me. I think there are ways to help the environment and our contribution to waste without going 100 to 0 immediately. I liked John Oliver's segment about food waste and I had no idea that sell by dates aren't even accurate, they're just indications about when the food will be the freshest. I also didn't know that food in landfills produces methane, harming the ozone layer. I will definitely be more conscious of the food I waste now that I know this, and it can't do anything but help both the environment and my budget.

The Plastic Pollution Coalition video was also eye opening. I liked that they used Jeff Bridges, because I like when celebrities cover environmental issues. I was reminded that recycling isn't a sustainable solution, and that it's just "downcycling." I don't remember the last time I used a disposable plastic water bottle, and I feel really good about that.

The video that was strange to me was the Zero Waste Lifestyle TedTalk. I think it's great that the speaker could fit three years worth of trash into a mason jar, but I think it's totally unreasonable for people to think they need to make their own toothpaste, deodorant, and lotion to be eco-friendly. I understand that there are more harmful products out there than safe and that making your own guarantees the safety, but there's no way most people have the time or desire to do the research on how to make their own products. I appreciated the insight and I love hearing stories like this, and I will definitely continue to use my reusable bags, glass storage containers at home, and buy only what I need.
