M7.7- The Agency's Role

I came across the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) and decided to do some more investigating. I loved learning about the agencies that aren't as widely discussed as the EPA, as they do very specific work that makes such as large impact.

The NRCS is the leading federal agency for assisting in restoring watershed health on private land and provides technical and financial assistance to producers who implement conservation practices and management strategies. This allows them to focus on restoration and protection of wetlands and fuels implementations that benefit and improve water quality.

The NRCS works with their internal team to improve current conservation practice technology, improve models to track nutrients and improve irrigation efficiency, allowing agricultural producers to more efficiently use water, increase water storage, and protect water quality.

In addition to watershed protection, the NRCS also works on flood mitigation, soil erosion reduction, sediment control, and fish and wildlife enhancement.

The NRCS does not do their work alone, and partners with the Wetlands Conservation Provisions as well as the Wetlands Reserves Program to work with farmers and ranchers to maintain or increase important wetland benefits while ensuring their ability to continue to produce food and fiber.

  1. It's crucial the work NRCS does to preserve natural resources because we are depleting them at a much faster rate than they can be replenished. I wonder what led to the increase in wetlands between 1998 to 2004. Also would be interested to see the conservation of wetlands in more recent data.
