M2.4- Ken Cook and Advocacy Organizations on Toxins in Personal Care Products.

This was the fastest 22 minute video I have ever watched. Not only was Ken Cook such a convincing and entertaining speaker, but this presentation was fascinating because he chose to focus on the bigger picture. He could have easily focused just on the technical aspects from their 10-person study, but his real-world examples, personal anecdotes, and the public health implications are what made this presentation so eye-opening. I am completely on board with the notion that the "small doses" of these chemicals accumulate, but not many people are able to see that. We think the doses are so low it won't make a difference, but just as with the earth, our body can only handle so much.

I think the most striking point in this presentation was when Ken explained that birth defects and leukemia are rising at such alarming rates that we cannot simply link them to genetics anymore. We must start to look at the impacts of overlapping chemicals and realize how present these toxins are in our daily lives. The fact that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will have some form of cancer in their life is terrifying, but not surprising, which is even scarier. We've become so accustomed to polluting our bodies with no short term consequences, but unfortunately I don't think we'll be able to say that for much longer.

  1. I agree with you that it's so terrifying that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will have some form of cancer in their life. So many of my parent's friends have passed away to some form of cancer. Many relatives and friend's have lost loved ones due to cancer as well. It's frustrating because there's so much in the environment that we are already exposed (even chemicals banned from decades ago) to but it's not as easy as switching to a different product. It also doesn't solve the root cause of everything. We need stronger and more protective environmental laws for the people!
